How To Stay Productive When You Are Sick?

How To Stay Productive When You Are Sick?

Guest post by Scarlett Erin (Share your favourite tips with 56,000+ Malaysian students)

As a student, it is a tough call to pull through the hectic schedule of tasks when you are sick. When you are not feeling well, it only deteriorates your health but it also affects your performance inside and outside the classroom.
How to Stay Productive Study Tips

Therefore, when you are sick you need to pursue a timely course of action to counteract its effects so that you can give your best as a student. Luckily, there are many ways you can stay active and productive as a student while you are sick. Some of them are as follows:

1. Avoid Skipping Classes

If possible, you should attend as many classes as possible. Even if you don’t attend the entire lecture, you’ll walk away with enough information to manage your assignment and prepare yourself for the next classes.

Skipping classes is never a good idea as it results in poor grades in the semestersdue to low attendance. You can take your medicines and a bottle of water to help you pull off the day.

2. Seek A Timely Medical Aid

When you are sick, you should first turn to the campus doctor for immediate help. This will provide you immediate relief from your ailment. Time is the decisive factor here. The longer you take to treat your illness, the longer it will affect your studies.

3. Stay In Touch With Your Classmates

When you are not well, it is important to stay connected with your classmates to keep yourself up-to-date with the current lectures and assignments. You can even borrow the notes from the student to jot down the important points of the lectures.

In this way, you will be able to make up for the loss of the missing classes and you will be able to prepare yourself for the next class.

4. Keep Away From Attending Lengthy Study Sessions

When you are sick, it is possible that you struggle to focus on the lectures which make it hard for you to continue till the last minute. Therefore, it is important that you divide your time in chunks. Rather than spending twohours on completing an entire assignment, you should break it down into different tasks and then attempt each of them.

This will make it possible to manage your energy and time and you will be able to keep your stress levels in control until you recover from the sickness.

5. Continue The Hard Work

When you are sick, it is normal to feel down. However, it should not stop you from achieving your daily goals. What you need to do is to believe in yourself and keep working as much as you can. As long as you continue doing the hard work, you will accomplish your objectives to some extent.

6. Prioritize Your Tasks

When you are sick, you have to prioritize your tasks in terms of their significance and deadline. You first need to complete the more important tasks and then do the other tasks that need to be delivered in a shorter span of time.

7. Seek Assistance From A Friend

Don’t shy away from taking help of one of your friends when you are sick. Acquiring the help of your best friend will help you deal with difficult academic tasks more effectively. If your friend resides too far away from your home, then you can send him a voice message, mail or you can even chat with him to convey your concerns.

8. Take Help Of Technology

In this time and age, it does not make any difference when you cannot attend classes due to sickness. With availability of call conferencing and cloud technology, you can stay connected to your class even when you are at home.

So don’t let the ailment be an excuse to spoil your studies and switch on your laptop or smartphone to stay in sync with your classroom.

9. Preventions Is Always Better Than Cure

When you are sick, you’ve so many things at stake. Not only are you feeling awful but you are also suffering from the loss of your studies which adds to your misery. So it is always advisable that you restrict yourself to a strict routine so that you can get well soon.

Therefore, you should avoid eating the junk food or doing the strenuous workout as these things will only worsen your condition and make you more lethargic. At the end of the day, it is your studies that would get compromised when you entertain such temptations.

If you follow a strict routine as recommended by your physician, you’ll be able to save your energies that you can put in your studies. Besides, you’ll be able to recuperate sooner and get back to your routine life.

The aforementioned tips aim to help you stay productive in your class. Hope they serve their purpose effectively to making you an active student when you are sick.

Things To Check Before Submitting Your Assignment

Things To Check Before Submitting Your Assignment

Guest post by Mary Jones (Share your favourite tips with 56,000+ Malaysian students)

Student life is a blessing, but assignment writing does not quite count as one. Along with giving you sleepless nights, it takes the students to come out of their comfort zones and to work hard and put in the best of their skills to  put together a good assignment. While most students make a last minute move, there are a few wise ones who work in a planned way and get their assignments right. Last minute or the early movers, there are a few things that each student must check before submitting their assignments, so as to avoid losing grades to small careless mistakes. Sometimes, students may miss out on some of these very important points which can lead to a total discard of their hard word. Thus, here are few things to look out for before submitting your assignment.

Before submitting an assignment, it is important to go through it more than once with the aim to sort out big and small issues that might have an impact on your grades or little details that might help in making a better impression. Here are a few things to look out for:

1. Format

The first and foremost thing to check before submitting an assignment is its format. Whether you are submitting a report or an article or an essay – the format and basic guidelines specific to each one of them must be in place. Check for other guidelines as well, such as the spacing, font size, etc.

2. Content

This is the most important part of your assignment. Look out for all the important points and information that had to be included. Make sure your information is well presented and makes sense when being read.

3. Structure

Each assignment, whether a report or an essay has a basic structure to follow. Make sure you have a proper opening introduction, good and appropriate paragraphs and a conclusion. All your content should have a proper flow and should make sense when read by your grader.

4. Paragraphs

The paragraphs are where you give arguments/evidences in support of your topic. Thus, make sure each paragraph is a decent size with each covering a single point/argument. Talking of more than one argument at the same point may be misleading or confusing to the reader.

5. Referencing

Make sure you understand the referencing system properly and you must give references for every piece of material used in your work that has another source than your own original thoughts or research.

6. Grammar and Punctuation

This is one of the most important factors that will contribute to making a good impression on the reader. The grammar and punctuations must be absolutely correct and thoroughly checked. The commas and semi-colons must be in their correct places and the flow of the sentences must be maintained. Grammatical errors are a huge turn-off to the readers while they also make your work less credible.

Finally, you should check for anything that might add any bit of extra touch to your work and make it more presentable and interesting. Proper illustrations, graphs and diagrams add to the visual appeal of your assignment, while making it attractive to the reader. A student’s life experience of going through transition from grade D to A reinforces the necessity of approaching the coursework with a structured approach popular with all academicians.

10 Steps to Check Your Assignment Before Submission

To sum it up, a student should follow these 10 steps below before submitting an assignment.
  1. Go through the assignment marking rubric and check if you have covered all the sections.
  2. Check for necessary sub headings to map the solution against the marking rubric or with the suggested structure, if any. Take note of the requirement if the marker expects a format with or without sub headings.
  3. Read through the whole solution to make sure the thought flow of points is smooth and add a few sentences here and there to aid the flow.
  4. Check for grammatical mistakes, especially those which are highlighted by MS word.
  5. Reduce too long sentences and break them down in to smaller sentences.
  6. Find sentences in your solution which state a fact but have no references. Add necessary in-text reference at the end of the these sentences. Do fill in all the fields of information in a specific citation. Missing information must be filled up with information about the source by looking them up over the internet.
  7. Reconfirm if the referencing style is as per assignment guidelines or not and add the bibliography at the end of the solution. One must strictly follow the university referencing guidelines as required in your coursework. Check the number of references in the bibliography and reconfirm if it’s sufficient for your assignment.
  8. Include the prescribed cover page along with the Table of Contents (TOC), if needed.
  9. There should be proper referencing done for outsourced materials.
  10. Before you submit check the Turn it in report if possible and make changes to remove plagiarized sections (if any) before the final submission.
This last minute effort will save you from making little mistakes that often take away those top-up marks that could have made a huge difference in your overall grades. Thus, check, read through and make sure that there is nothing that might steal the show from all the hard work that you have put into your assignment.

5 Common Millennials Purchasing Habits in Malaysia

5 Common Millennials Purchasing Habits in Malaysia

Guest post by Mark De Jesus (Share your favourite tips with 56,000+ Malaysian students)

Inflation and the higher cost of living is a monster that we all have to deal with, regardless of age, race or income level. It affects the prices of goods and services as a whole, but the trick is knowing how to manage your own personal finances to ensure you maximise the value of every ringgit that you earn.
Malaysia Students Ringgit Malaysia Coins Financial Education

Millennials are facing a tricky situation right now whereby many are expecting a higher starting salary to cushion the higher cost of living, yet their spending habits don’t quite seem to work in their favour either. There is a famous saying by Robert Kiyosaki, “It’s not how much money you make, but how much money you keep and how hard it works for you”.

This is a way of life that many Millennials can gain from, put aside the figures and think about what you do with your money. Many of us are living in high levels of debt and well beyond our means.

Purchasing Habits among Malaysian Millennials

A recent Malaysian survey asked Millennials aged between 22-35 what they were spending their hard-earned income on. Though it is a small sample size of 10 respondents, the results are not surprising as it is a common trend across most research:
  1. Food

This is where the largest chunk of millennials hard-earned money goes to, in fact, it is as high as 40% of their monthly income. No surprise here, we love to eat and dining out has become a favourite pastime for many of us. The growth of the café culture and also hip joints started up by our very own Malaysians sees many of us willing to spend on food despite the increase in cost of living.
  2. Loans and Debts

Did you know that over 22,500 bankruptcy cases in Malaysia as of September 2016, were individuals between the age of 25 – 34. This is worrying and highlights that many millennials are living beyond their means. Surprisingly, the number one cause of bankruptcy are the hire purchase loans, followed by personal loans, and then housing loans. Many also live off high-interest credit card debt that continues to swell and they find themselves spending most of their income towards debts.
  3. Rent and Utilities

Payment of their home rent and bills takes up a large portion of our income too.
  4. Fun and Online Shopping

Late night outs, alcohol, binge drinking, partying, shopping, retail therapy. You name it. Millennials love to spend their money on instant gratification and excessive lifestyles, including the latest mobile phones and electronic gadgets.
  5. Petrol

Petrol consumption is a necessity and it’s no wonder it’s one of the top spending habits. Many of us prefer to own our own cars, so our daily commutes will definitely eat into our monthly income.
5 Common Millennials Purchasing Habits Malaysia Students

Let’s not forget that Malaysians are online shopaholics as recently reported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) who shared that Malaysia has the highest penetration of online shoppers in the region, making us one of the fastest-growing online markets in the region. 7% of online shoppers make a purchase daily, 26% once a week, and 54% once a month. Although this is in totality, we’re pretty sure Millennials make up for a good size of this demographic, given that an average Millennial spends 3.8 hours of their day on their mobile phones. Their time is split between their social media accounts, watching videos, and online shopping.

These are the biggest expenses per month, and if you look at it, none of those listed above actually works for you. It doesn’t generate more income for you, it just causes your wallets to bleed. Savings and investments don’t even make it into the Top 5 and that’s alarming.

Young, educated and in debt

In fact, a study by the Asian Institute of Finance (AIF) revealed that Millennials in Malaysia are dealing with large financial stress so early in their lives, by being trapped by their high-level of debt and impulsive spending habits.

Many of us are living on money that we don’t even have yet, we live off our credit cards and there are approximately 38% of us taking personal loans to fund our lifestyles. 47% are living off high-interest-rate credit cards, that’s nearly half of the Millennial population in Malaysia. Only 28% of Gen Y claim to know how to manage their finances.

It’s clear that while Millennials have a healthy appetite for spending, it starts to border on unhealthy for their financial security when they start living in debt and living beyond their means.

Seeing this worrying trend, we suggest keeping on top of your finances with a budget, but also educating yourself by reading articles for more financial tips and advice on how to best manage your finances.
