5 Practical Tips on Choosing Degree Courses at IPTA

Posted by Chong

News are out that STPM 2013 results' release date (tarikh keputusan peperiksaan STPM 2013 keluar) is on February 10, 2014 and SPM 2013 results (tarikh keputusan SPM 2013 keluar) on March 19/20/21, 2014 (to be confirmed). Read how to check your SPM results online or using SMS.

Upon receiving STPM results, the million dollar question will pop up: what degree courses should I apply? Which courses and universities should be filled as my eight choices in the IPTA/UPU online application form?

While the selection of choices is rather personal, below are some general helpful and practical tips to aid your decision making.
  1. Always check the official minimum requirements of the course and make sure you meet ALL of them. Do not waste your choices putting courses which have higher requirements than your actual results. Some courses require you to take certain subject in your STPM exam, do not apply these courses if you did not take the subject, because you will not be considered if you do not meet the subject-result requirement!

  2. Always put your choices in the correct order - the course and university that you hope to get the most should be put as the first choice, followed by second most-wanted course and university and so on. There is a popular belief among applicants that usually you will not get the first or second choice, hence you should put your actual first choice of course and university as the third choice out of the eight choices in the application form. This belief is COMPLETELY BULLSHIT and do not ever do this yourselves! Many students who did this end up getting their first or second choice and deeply regret for doing so on top of facing a lot of unnecessary hassles in changing courses and transfering into another university later. If you ever hear your friends telling you or spreading this, please help debunk this rumour!

  3. Download and use our free iPhone app - My Higher Edu
    - which offers complete degree course information for UM, USM, UKM, UPM and UTM. You can search the courses by course name and it will show your a list of courses and their overview, duration, modules/subjects and the job opportunities upon graduation. Also included in the iOS app are two useful features - estimated course and cost calculator.

  4. Go to ReCom.org - the best education forum in Malaysia. There are lots of seniors there willing to answer your questions, offer personal advices and scholarship application tips.

  5. For non-bumiputera / Chinese only, always use the statistics available at QuanSheng.org as a guidance, to get an idea of what results your seniors used to get into the specific degree courses in the recent years. An important thing to keep in your mind while browsing these stats is, the (STPM CGPA mean, min-max, mode) stats are provided as general indication and guidance only, as long as you meet the official minimum requirements of the course, there is always a chance to get admitted. Also, call the QuanSheng.org hotline provided to ask about specific details on courses and universities, get advices from the forum and email them. QuanSheng.org is a non-profit student organization run by your seniors voluntarily to help you to get admitted into Malaysia's public universities / IPTA.
On top of these tips, always consider your own interests, personality and ability while choosing the right courses for yourself!

  1. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
TOP 5 UNIVERSITIES IN MALAYSIA 2012/2013
    ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

    (1)Universiti Malaya(UM)
    (2)Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM)
    (3)Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM)
    (4)Universiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM)
    (5)Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM)

NOTE: To be offered a place in the above top universities especially demanding courses, one needs to have at least a CGPA 3.5 to be able to better compete with others but still there is no guarantee.
