Score A+ SPM EST (English for Science and Technology)

Greetings, I'm writing this on 31st March of 2012. I have received my results on 21 March and scored straight A's. A+ for EST. Alhamdulilah :)

Now I can't tell how to get A+ for this subject because the way to obtain it varies which include the ''strictness'' of the marker, maybe format, the difficulty or English usage. I can only help by sharing what I have gone through.

Some may ask ''should I take EST? ''. It's okay to be doubtful and at the same time careful as well. In my school, only 2 people took EST. In other words, in the exam hall there were only 2 lads sitting for EST (the other person got an A). What surprises me is that his command of English is obscenely ridiculously superior to mine. In addition, he is the top 5 scrabble champion in Asia and Melaka state champion of ''Spell It Right''. On EST day, he forgot to follow report format, which in all probability cost him an A instead of A+. I do not know if format alone that gave him an A. He wrote 5 pages. I wrote 2 and a quarter :D. The point is EST is a ''fragile'' subject. In other words, it’s like standing on a fence. You may fall onto lush green field of grass or a hard concrete floor on the other side. Essay influences marks the most. Most say essay alone determines your EST grade. So be twice careful with essay yeah! That's the best I can describe about EST.

My experience:
My school do not offer EST thus no EST textbook. Maybe it never existed at all. I searched for EST and i can only find exercise books for practise and past years. Combine them all together it may equal the thickness of a SUCCESS book. I’ve tried online but to no avail :(

Since my school do not offer EST in class thus I only have class for 9 subjects. (EST is the 10th subject). Only in form 5 when it is time to submit ''slip mata pelajaran SPM'' then I realised EST is available. Yes, I had a lot of questions in mind. I went online and finally found this website in early 2011. No recent posts at that time :(

Since my school does not offer EST, We had to study on our own. We never studied together because we were too busy with other subjects and co-curriculum. We had no time to do EST practises. All we did is read the question (essay), answer concisely in our mind, then have a look at the sample answer. We answered objective questions in the same manner. So... our EST books were really clean (no writing at all XD) Since he has superior command in English to me, I consulted him which happened rarely :P. We had no training and no guidance from teachers at all. Even teachers recommend we do not take EST. We had our respective reasons actually.

What I did during SPM EST paper is I calmed myself. I find that when I’m calm I do not doubt my answers and I can think clearly. Secondly, I answered my ''information transfer'' questions directly from the passage. Its like cut the answer from the passage and paste it into the answer table. Nothing is added. I answered my essay question according to the points given. I neither write nor think of additional points. I only focus on my English and format to avoid carelessness. I only managed 2 and a quarter pages =.= (shameful). The other guy taking EST did 5 pages. Simple concept. Only point and elaboration. No additional points. Well, I think that’s about it. 2 years in one post. haha. Of course a lot of students do well in EST but each have their own story to a glorious end. I guess my story have come to a glorious end as well.

What I would like to say to students taking EST is best of luck! I understand your doubts and concerns about this subject but the decision is only yours to make since you alone know your capability. Do not underestimate this subject like the seniors up there do. Do not burden your thoughts with this subject. Yes, miracle happens.

Congratulations in advance to the future SPM students. I'm not a spiritual type of person but since I passed SPM with flying colours, yes, there is god.

Peace be upon you.

Previous years, application for PSD scholarships for overseas degree program (permohonan tajaan JPA untuk lepasan Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia di bawah program ijazah luar negara) were open for SPM-result holders one week after SPM results release. This year, however, the application has not opened and up until this announcement, there have been a lot of spectaculation regarding whether JPA scholarships will still be offered to SPM-result holders and what are the details of the new revised version of JPA scholarships as told by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in June 2011.

We previously wrote at Malaysia Scholarship Information Centre on the New PSD Sponsorships:
In June 2011, Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced to only give PSD sponsorships to university entrants instead of SPM top scorers from 2012 to avoid the distress they have caused in past years.
This is a great disappointment to those who did well in SPM 2011 and scored excellent results. According to PM, those who do well in the Form Five SPM examination will receive small bursaries instead to pursue their foundation studies.
New PSD sponsorships will be awarded to those who get very good results at foundation AND secure a place at top universities. This is because those who do well in O-levels (SPM) do not necessary mean they will do well in A-levels. In other words, now PSD sponsorships are awarded based on A-levels or STPM results instead of SPM. In June 2011, Najib also mentioned to identify the universities which are deemed "top" institutions in due course but up until today, the information is still not available.
Last but not least, Najib said not all top students will be given overseas scholarships because local public universities need top students as well.
While waiting for the official announcement, we suggest all SPM and STPM results holders to apply Khazanah scholarships, PETRONAS scholarships, Bank Negara scholarships, Axiata International Baccalaureate (IB) Pre-University Programme, Axiata Undergraduate Degree Programme and Crowe Horwath Project CHange scholarships before they expire this week! Don't Go To University For The Sake Of It

Editor's Note: The post below was first published at Kenny Sia's blog here. What!? You don't know who is Kenny Sia?! This well-written post with a clear message is definitely worth a read, especially for students who got their STPM results two days ago and are now applying for IPTA placements and also candidates who will get their SPM 2013 results on March 19 or 20, 2014 (to be confirmed) - here's how to check STPM and SPM results online and using SMS. Links to relevant posts were added.

Written by Kenny Sia

Wanted to write about this topic for a while, but then I got carried away with work.

Recently I had to interview a round of job applicants for some positions I was hiring.

I was looking for sales consultants and an administrative assistant to join my fitness centre. These are entry-level positions good for fresh graduates, and I was looking forward to resumes from - maybe - business or hospitality grads in my inbox.

Ultimately, I didn't end up hiring any of the fresh graduates, but that's another story altogether. *remind self to blog about the atrocity of fresh grads*

But what surprised me was that in amongst the 20 over resumes that I received, a few who applied were actually Bachelor degree holders.

Not only that, they were degree holders in... Engineering.

An engineering graduate applying to a become a sales consultant at a fitness centre. Are you kidding me?

Is he gonna make a robot greeting customers at the front desk?

It sounds almost as ridiculous as a blogger opening a fitness centre.

Not that I have anything against engineering degree holders. In fact, I am one of them. Lim peh right here holds a Bachelors Degree in Electronic & Communication Engineering, with Honours.

Which is really just a fancy way of saying "Hey look, I am holding a piece of paper that I spent 5 years in university working on, but acherly I donch really know what it was all about!" :D

I got a theory with regards to students, in particular MALAYSIAN students, who study engineering at universities.

Kenny Sia's Theorem On Malaysian Engineering Students: "99% of Malaysian students who do engineering at university do it because their friends/parents/government ask them to, not because they really want to."

I'm serious. If I could have a dollar every time I see an engineering graduate getting a job in something COMPLETELY unrelated to what he studies, I'd be so rich I could buy a fake $5-billion dollar boat made of gold and dinosaur bone.

I know it's true. I am one of them.

My parents spent hundreds and thousands of dollars sending me to an overseas university, and I end up writing a blog and running a gym.

What a waste of time. What a waste of money.

I'm surprised my parents hadn't disowned me after I wasted so much of their money on my university education.

It's quite sad to think that the best thing I did in uni was joining the university gym. If I only knew which career path I'd take, I would never have picked electronic engineering. I would do something more related to what I am doing right now - like a commerce or hospitality degree. Why the hell did I choose to study engineering in the first place?

I blame it all on society pressures.

What to do? I was fresh out of high school when I was forced to make a decision on what course to do at university.

I was 17. How the hell do I know what I want to do for the rest of my life? I never had the chance to see the world nor explore my interests. Yet at 17 I was put in front of a university brochure and forced to make a AUD$100,000 decision.

My parents being parents are more than happy to comply. In Malaysia, there's no such thing as a "gap year" like in Western countries, where kids after high school take a year off to do travel or volunteer work as a means to discover their interests, before continuing on their university education.

In Malaysia, kids must go STRAIGHT to college or university after they finish high school. Never mind the fact that most universities/colleges are privatised money-guzzling business entities now. In Malaysia, if kids don't go STRAIGHT to university, they must be delinquents and therefore failure in life.

So what do I do?

I chose the so-called "safest" career option - engineering.

Why? Because back in the 1990s, Mahathir encouraged everybody to study technology.

Why? Because we got MULTIMEDIA SUPER CORRIDOR. And CYBERJAYA. And MULTIMEDIA SUPER TUALAMPA. And apparently everyone who study engineering will make a lot of money.

Bullshit.

Tell me which one of Malaysia's richest men have an electronic engineering degree?

When you think about it, it is so sad. University is so expensive, so important as a pathway in a person's career development. Yet so many of us rush into deciding on what course to pick when we really have no idea what we want to do straight after we finish high school.

In the end, all we're really doing is going to university for the sake of going to university.

By the time we find out how much we hate the course we're doing, it's too late.

Next time when I have kids, I'm gonna force them to take a gap year travelling or volunteering to find out where their true passion lies before they enrol into University. After all, if they are gonna be spending my money on their university education, they may as well do it right.

Don't want them to end up like me - studying so hard for a piece of paper that I never ended up using. Parents, please don't rush your kids to go university for the sake of going to university. If they decide wrong course at University, die lah.

Might as well go Uneverstudy.

5 Practical Tips on Choosing Degree Courses at IPTA

Posted by Chong

News are out that STPM 2013 results' release date (tarikh keputusan peperiksaan STPM 2013 keluar) is on February 10, 2014 and SPM 2013 results (tarikh keputusan SPM 2013 keluar) on March 19/20/21, 2014 (to be confirmed). Read how to check your SPM results online or using SMS.

Upon receiving STPM results, the million dollar question will pop up: what degree courses should I apply? Which courses and universities should be filled as my eight choices in the IPTA/UPU online application form?

While the selection of choices is rather personal, below are some general helpful and practical tips to aid your decision making.
  1. Always check the official minimum requirements of the course and make sure you meet ALL of them. Do not waste your choices putting courses which have higher requirements than your actual results. Some courses require you to take certain subject in your STPM exam, do not apply these courses if you did not take the subject, because you will not be considered if you do not meet the subject-result requirement!

  2. Always put your choices in the correct order - the course and university that you hope to get the most should be put as the first choice, followed by second most-wanted course and university and so on. There is a popular belief among applicants that usually you will not get the first or second choice, hence you should put your actual first choice of course and university as the third choice out of the eight choices in the application form. This belief is COMPLETELY BULLSHIT and do not ever do this yourselves! Many students who did this end up getting their first or second choice and deeply regret for doing so on top of facing a lot of unnecessary hassles in changing courses and transfering into another university later. If you ever hear your friends telling you or spreading this, please help debunk this rumour!

  3. Download and use our free iPhone app - My Higher Edu
    - which offers complete degree course information for UM, USM, UKM, UPM and UTM. You can search the courses by course name and it will show your a list of courses and their overview, duration, modules/subjects and the job opportunities upon graduation. Also included in the iOS app are two useful features - estimated course and cost calculator.

  4. Go to ReCom.org - the best education forum in Malaysia. There are lots of seniors there willing to answer your questions, offer personal advices and scholarship application tips.

  5. For non-bumiputera / Chinese only, always use the statistics available at QuanSheng.org as a guidance, to get an idea of what results your seniors used to get into the specific degree courses in the recent years. An important thing to keep in your mind while browsing these stats is, the (STPM CGPA mean, min-max, mode) stats are provided as general indication and guidance only, as long as you meet the official minimum requirements of the course, there is always a chance to get admitted. Also, call the QuanSheng.org hotline provided to ask about specific details on courses and universities, get advices from the forum and email them. QuanSheng.org is a non-profit student organization run by your seniors voluntarily to help you to get admitted into Malaysia's public universities / IPTA.
On top of these tips, always consider your own interests, personality and ability while choosing the right courses for yourself!
