Malaysia Education is World-class

by Chan Weng Kit from Ipoh, first posted on The Star Online (Send in your opinion to be featured here)

IF money is not a problem, where would you study medicine – the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI), Cardiff University in Britain, Trinity College Dublin, or Universiti Malaya (UM)?

I’m sure many would opt for a foreign university. After all, aren’t these universities superior in every conceivable way to our homegrown ones? But hold on for a second.

Malaysia Education is World-class

Looking at academic reputation for medicine and life sciences (QS World University Rankings 2015/2016), UM scored 82.7 while none of the other universities scored above 80. RCSI wasn’t even included in the top 400 of the list. In fact, UM’s score was equal to Singapore’s NTU.

For engineering and technology, the top ranking universities are Yale University, King’s College London, University of Edinburgh, McMaster University and Universiti Malaya.

If you chose Universiti Malaya, you are not only an extremely patriotic individual but, more importantly, you would also be absolutely correct! Referring again to the same QS Rankings, UM (54) is ranked significantly higher than Yale (65), Edinburgh (73), King’s College London (153), Cardiff (176) and McMaster (215).

For added reference, even the world renowned University College London (ranked seventh overall in the world) is barely a whisker above UM at 50th place.

The point I’m trying to drive home here is that, contrary to what many think, Malaysia does indeed possess world-class education.

Last year, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh came under a lot of flak when he commented that our higher education was on par with developed nations such as the UK, Germany and Australia. Many disagreed, arguing on the following points of contention:

1) International syllabi are far superior to our national curriculum; and

2) Malaysia’s position near the bottom of the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) rankings.

For the sake of argument, let us compare a world renowned Pre-U syllabus, the Cambridge International (CIE) A-Levels, with our local equivalent, STPM. Where the syllabus is concerned, STPM trumps A-Levels comprehensively.

For instance, does A-Levels Chemistry require knowledge about phase equilibria? What about the Aufbau principle, Hund’s rule or the Pauli exclusion principle?

In Physics, does the A-Levels syllabus mention Bohr’s postulates? What about phasor diagrams? Gauss’s Law? Law of equipartition of energy?

In Biology, do A-Levels students learn about the chloride shift? What about parturition? Or type I, II and III survivorship curves as well as K-strategies and r-strategies?

For Pure Mathematics, does the A-Levels syllabus cover matrices? Or de Moivre’s Theorem? What about conics or the Mclaurin series? None of these concepts are introduced at all in the A-Levels syllabus, yet STPM students learn every single one of them. Anybody who has done both STPM and CIE A-Levels will know this. So which syllabus is superior now?

Critics will counter by arguing that STPM encourages rote memorisation while the A-Levels necessitate application of knowledge. Having done both before, I know what I am talking about when I say that if anything, the opposite is true.

For instance, STPM Physics requires frequent derivation of formulae, unlike the A-Levels equivalent which generally allows a statement of formulae to be made without any derivation.

Moreover, A-Levels questions have been blatantly repeated over the years with no change whatsoever.

This means that A-Levels students can do tonnes of past year papers, memorise the necessary working and, with a bit of luck, expect to encounter the same type of question in the real exam! I know I did.

Contrast this with the latest STPM Baharu syllabus which came out only in 2012, and you begin to understand how impossible it would be to predict the type of questions coming out. So which syllabus is encouraging factual recall now?

Let’s now consider the Pisa rankings. According to their official website, Pisa is a “triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students.” The fundamental flaw with this methodology is students in different countries finish compulsory education at different ages.

For instance, UK students generally enter university aged 18 (after A-Levels) while our Malaysian students enter aged 19 (for matriculation and foundation students only) and above (after STPM, A-Levels, IB).

Since we start and complete our secondary education at a later age, our performance at any particular age will always be at a distinct disadvantage compared to countries that finish their secondary education sooner.

Bottom line is society in general will always look at our highest qualifications, not the age at which we attained them. Quality of education should not be assessed on how fast we enter university. Instead, it should be based on the knowledge we have acquired when we actually enter university regardless of age.

Hence, a fairer method to evaluate student performance would be to conduct the same survey on all pre-university students irrespective of their age.

Sadly, until such a test is conducted and the results published, we cannot consider Pisa a reliable gauge for the quality of our education system.

I agree that there is still plenty of room for improvement before we can go toe to toe with the top universities from Britain, the US, Australia, Singapore and Japan. But to dismiss our education system as inferior is gross injustice.

For the final nail in the coffin, I invite all of you to compare the now defunct STPM Further Mathematics syllabus with every Pre-U Further Mathematics syllabus out there, including CIE A-Levels Further Maths, Singapore’s GCE A-Levels H2 Further Maths, IB Higher Level Maths and HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) Extended Mathematics Modules. If this does not convince you of the quality of our education, nothing ever will.

What saddens me most is that parents are willing to sacrifice their entire life savings for an education overseas which may not even be as good as the one at home. It is high time we wake up. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

SPM 2019 Tips: How to Tackle KBAT/HOTS Questions

Guest post by Lindy Lim (Share your tips with 50,000+ Malaysian students)

Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi (KBAT) or Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) has recently formed a reputation of being one of the most feared entities among students sitting for the SPM. You might’ve encountered them before:

Berdasarkan perkembangan teknologi persenjataan masa kini, ramalkan masa depan dunia.” - Sejarah, SPM 2015

Questions like these often strike terror into the hearts of many students, but here are some ways to get around them:

SPM KBAT HOTS Questions
Soalan KBAT sebanyak 40% UPSR dan 50% SPM pada tahun 2016 -  Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia

Practise

Search the net for these questions. Dig them up in books. These days, most of the SPM exercise books in the market incorporate HOTS questions, but in my opinion, it’s not enough. One suggestion for SPM Maths is to look up SAT Math problems. For those who do not know, the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) comprises of three sections (Reading & Writing, Math, optional essay) and is a standardised test taken by American students generally to measure college readiness. Here are two examples:

Tickets for a play were $2 for each child and $4 for each adult. At one showing of the play, one adult brought 4 children and the remaining adults brought 2 children each. The total ticket sales from the children and adults was $60. How many children and adults attended the play?” - Khan Academy

Tonya hits a golf ball from an initial height of 10 feet. The height of the golf ball, h, in feet above sea level, t seconds after the ball was hit, can be modelled by a quadratic equation. If the golf ball reaches its maximum height of 74 feet exactly 2 seconds after it has been hit, which of the following equations represents this relationship?” - CollegeBoard mobile app

The questions are definitely not similar to the SPM format, and units may be different (miles, gallons, feet, inches) but they test the same skills. Besides, practising these will reduce your fear of encountering long questions and train you to solve a problem one step at a time. A good resource would be Khan Academy’s SAT prep.

(Plus, students who are aspiring to study in the US get to prep for the SAT at the same time)

Apply

All the facts that you’ve memorised and are ready to regurgitate (only to choke on them when you see a question that isn’t related) can actually be applied in answering KBAT questions. For example, for the question above, think back to all the major events and wars that you’ve studied in Sejarah. Why did a particular power win a particular battle? What would’ve happened if there were no nuclear weapons, and they were not dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? How much different would Malayan history be if we had better technology and weaponry than the British? The same applies to other humanities subjects like Ekonomi Asas, and even the sciences. That leads us to…

Master the Basics

If you do not have a firm grasp or understanding of the basics for any particular subject, you can’t apply your knowledge effectively. Practise and work on those before attempting any HOTS questions.

Read

It’s common sense, really. Reading newspapers and articles allows you to keep up with current news, which you can reflect on or manipulate, especially for arts and humanities. You don’t even need to read physical newspapers and magazines. Hit up social media sites like Facebook or Twitter and subscribe to pages that cover the daily news, both national and international.

In my opinion, I love the addition of these questions because not only are they fun to try to work out, but they let us apply what we’ve learned instead of blindly solving direct problems. Although, I must admit, a few of them can be rather… ridiculous.

Lindy Lim Li Wen is a post-SPM student who enjoys writing, programming and is currently still ruminating on possible education pathways.

Do Not Sell Your BB1M Vouchers for Cash

Many smaller bookstores or businesses illegally offer to purchase your BB1M vouchers with cash. For example, they will pay you RM200 in cash to purchase your RM250 BB1M vouchers. After that, they will claim RM250 from the government using the vouchers. In order words, they sell nothing (no physical book or anything) but earn RM50. This seems like a good business for the small bookstores and tempting bargain for students with BB1M book vouchers. However, we just want to remind you that BB1M vouchers should never be used this way, or you might get caught. It happened in previous years if you check the news. In fact, this year the authorities have already started tracking the illegal buying and selling of BB1M book vouchers.

One more thing, remember to use all your 1 Malaysia Book Vouchers by 30 June 2016 (Update: extended to 31 July 2016) before they expire!

Comment on Cancellation of JPA Scholarships / KPM Bursaries for Overseas Studies

SPM Results Cancellation of JPA Scholarships / KPM Bursaries for Overseas Studies

I’m concerned that there are ministers who are fighting to cut JPA scholarships.

I was one of the students who you said “the government is spending unnecessary money on”.

Let me tell you my life story. I lost my dad at the age of 11. It was never easy. I didn’t have the privileges like my other peers. Clothes? I was thankful to even get a pair of new clothes each year.

I was always the quiet type in school and I rarely mix with anyone. All my spare time is spent on studying.

I’ll never forget the time I asked my mum I wanted to go for a movie, my mum just sat on the ground and started to cry. My mom was working odd jobs and we barely had any money to survive.

Even writing this, brings tears to my eyes..All the hardships…

I was thankful to have my mum, all my close relatives and my teachers to guide me. My mum quit her job and started home tuitions just to guide me with my studies after school.

My school teachers would come to fetch me from my house for tuitions, because I didn’t have any transport.

I’ll never ever forget all your sacrifices and those who have been with me from Day 1.

I still remember the time I got my SPM certificate. My mum was devastated. She didn’t even say any congratulations. Because we can’t afford a B.

After all truthfully, we are a minority. What are the odds of getting into an IPTA. And we definitely don’t have any money to go into private university.

I was blessed to have successfully gotten a JPA scholarship. Without this, I wouldn’t have fulfilled my dreams of becoming a doctor and treating others.

Without going overseas, I wouldn’t have been a DIFFERENT PERSON. The outgoing, “Social Butterfly” I am now. Who knows, I might not even have a degree now if I wasn’t sponsored.

So is the Government really wasting money on sponsoring students?

Please don’t cut scholarships. There are better way to save money. Don’t trim the hopes and dreams of our future generation.

= BY THE WAY THIS POST HAS NO POLITICAL AFFILIATION WHAT SO EVER =

Post-SPM Experiences: Sincere Advices to Students Not Getting Expected SPM Results

Guest post by Stephen Kong Lik Soon (Share your personal experiences with 51,000+ Malaysian students)

After the SPM examinations are over, I am constantly being bothered by a question. “What if?” In the past we hate the teachers in school so much for making us stay in a boring classroom and revise boring lessons. We hate homework, especially when it is given before a long holiday. We crack our minds to figure out some way to trick the teacher to talk with us and forget everything about lessons. However, the moment we handed in our last paper for SPM, suddenly I am struck with this thought, ‘Now that it is all over, what now?’ I never felt this hopeless before, because in the past I always had too much stuff on my mind to think about, like, academics, co-curricular activities and all.

Post-SPM Experiences

After a few months our results came out. Before the actual day we were nervously waiting for the dreaded day to come and it came at last. The moment we received our results slip, I immediately slipped into an abyss of depression, because I did not get the results other expected of me. For days I pondered over my results, wondering what could I have done wrong during the exam, and how was I going to face the world after this. But here are a few tips for all the students who did not get their expected results in SPM.

  • Your SPM results are not everything.

I mean, sure, a good SPM result slip is like an attractive prize to show off to your friends and family, not to mention nosy relatives, but other than that it is just another piece of paper. Getting bad grades for SPM does not mean you are not good. It simply means that other people do not get our point or opinion. Applying for scholarships are also easier with a good result, but what happens when you get into university? People care less about your results and more about what you can do and what you are capable of. When you get into society to work, people will not ask what you got for your SPM, but rather how good you are at your work. So that is why, SPM results are only means to temporary glory.

  • Your parents will be disappointed, but they will know you have tried your best.

This is a universal truth that some parents might deny. Although our parents express how disappointed they are with our results, deep down inside they still care for us and they know that we have tried our best. I have strict parents myself. When I showed them my results, they said nothing except for “You could have done so much better if you had worked harder.” and “This is the result of you playing too much computer games”. I was heartbroken, no doubt, but I realise the pain is only temporary, because what my parents said might not be the truth. They do appreciate our efforts in trying so hard to succeed during the exam and their words are just another way of saying it. Bear in mind, you are never under-appreciated.

  • Not all the geniuses or successful people got where they are now with their SPM result.

In fact, a lot of them failed to even complete their education process. The famous inventor of light bulbs, Thomas Addison, did not even complete school. Fuelled by nothing but his own imagination and determination he is currently one of the world’s most renowned scientists to revolutionise the world. The inventor of Microsoft is also another good example. He was a college dropout and still managed to work his way up to become one of the world’s richest man. Our future will not be secured just because we got bad grades for SPM. It is just a mere setback intended to test us, to see if we are strong and bold enough to get back up and rise up to the challenge. Do not let the obstacles have the last laugh, because you know you are so much more than that.

Having said these, do not give up your dreams just because of not achieving your dreamed results in SPM. It does not define who you will be in future, because we craft our own path in life. We are the masters of our own destiny. If there is no path for us to take, then we’ll create a new path for ourselves. Live out your life with exceptional colours and never let the world dampen your spirits!

SPM straight A's - what are the sacrifices?

by Joshua, a straight A SPM scorer who likes to write during his free time. (Share your education experiences with 50,000+ students in Malaysia!)

Acquiring a bundle of straight A’s was definitely every SPM student’s dream alongside their parents’. However, we must be willing to perform sacrifices from our other aspects of life in order to do so. Sometimes, we might even have to give up doing things that we like in order to creep closer to our goal by doing things which are productive, specifically studying our hearts out. In no means of bragging, as a straight A student, I can tell you that I did not see that I’ve achieved much in life after the final day of the SPM examination as most of my time is spent into books; doing revisions, exercises, memorizing facts, etc. I realized that I missed out so much on life prior studying for my SPM.

SPM straight A - what are the sacrifices?

After six lazy months of my Form Four year, I’d became enlightened to study in a “serious” manner. I thought it was time to start because early preparation never hurts… right? Unfortunately it was also signaling the start of my torment as this little “quest” of getting A’s in SPM began.

1. Giving up hobbies and general interests

As I started my “serious” study, I gave up my habits of exercising, and learning martial arts. So, for one and a half years I did not touch any track shoes or put on any boxing gloves. As a direct result, I got chubbier and gained some weight alongside a “one pack” ^_^ . Aside from that, I gave up on many plans I have in the future like parkour, learning to play the piano and guitar, and swimming.

2. Lacking sleep

Like reading a storybook, once you find it interesting, you’ll also find it addicting to read. The same thing goes for studying when we really need to read carefully and understand the smallest details to get the big picture. And when I did, I do exercises (not the physical, the books ^_^) excitingly and addictively until I most of the time, lose track of time. So I might begin studying at 10PM thinking to do some revisions before going to bed and realize it was 1AM or 2AM without having the intention of studying that long. Eventually it became a habit and I lost my sleep hours quite frequently and be sleepy at school especially during classes and became completely stressed out. Eventually I even have trouble sleeping and have my eyes wide opened till daylight shines.

3. Neglecting family and friends.

I realized in the period I’m “seriously” studying for my SPM, I’m also seriously neglecting my friends and family. I stopped going out for fun activities with my family, even for trips which they claim calms me down from studying although it will not. At school, I did not spend much time socializing with friends and brush up my poor social skills which I thought was not useful for the simple and narrow minded reason I do not wish to be a businessmen. But good social skills goes a long way than becoming a businessmen. So now, I lack friends I might say, lol.

4. Developing good relationships

High school should be a place we socialize and create everlasting friendships, bonds and etc. while at the same time study. I put the weightage too much on studying that I miss out chances of getting to know the girls of my interest a little better. I do not find this necessary but I think I lack a love life somehow lol.

5. Abusing my personal needs and emotions.

As I study and lose track of time, I will also sometimes skip meals. Very unhealthy habit as I might develop gastric. Additionally, when I do eat I opt for quick unbalanced meals in the vicinity like the my school canteen’s oily fried noodles, bland fried rice, nasi lemak or fast foods like Domino’s Pizza or McDonalds’s for the simple fact that I do not need time preparing my food, “wasting” my precious time in the process. I, at that time would rather spend my time studying as I get one step closer to my goal.

I write this article in no means to discourage you in studying and getting straight A’s. Getting straight A’s can be easy and sacrifice-free if you are able to balance all the important aspects in your life wisely while putting a load of efforts studying, or you can be a genius and not study and get straight A’s in your SPM. Just kidding but anyway, genius or not good luck for your SPM!

Handy Essay Writing Tips for ESL Students

Guest post by Annie Horowitz (Share your tips with 50,000+ Malaysian students)

The challenge of writing an academic essay for non-native speakers is always an overwhelming task especially if you do not possess a good command of the English language. Anyway, as you proceed with your studies, this outline of basic principles and tips will help you succeed in writing a quality academic essay.

Handy Essay Writing Tips for ESL Students

Keep in mind the structure

A good English essay must be logical and consistent. Start with a powerful, catchy thesis and reveal your story step by step, guiding a reader along your arguments to the conclusion.

Introduction paragraph (approximately 5-7 short sentences) should begin with a strong thesis statement. Think over your topic and try to come up with an attention-grabbing assertion, which would work as a trigger for your reader's mind. You may agree or disagree with the point given in essay topic, you may object or support someone's saying etc. Your task is to make your way of elaborating the essay clear for the reader. You may also include some additional information regarding the subject of your essay to give your readers some background of the stated problem.

Body paragraphs (usually 3; 5-9 sentences each). In this part, present the proof for your opinion or facts to back up your thesis argument. In a light and persuasive manner, you should explain to your readers the credibility of your ideas. The golden rule of convincing writing – put the strongest arguments in the beginning and at the end of the paragraph (where are the points of reader's attention).

Conclusion paragraph should be brief, coherent and contain the total sum of all the main ideas mentioned throughout your essay. Use such phrases as “To conclude,...”, “To sum up,...”, “In conclusion,...”, “Finally,...”, “In a nutshell,...”.

Work on your language

The main pitfall of many ESL students is their active vocabulary. You should remember that English essay is not only a task to explain your opinion or show what kind of person you are, but also a way to demonstrate your skills of writing in foreign (English) language.

Prepare beforehand some interesting collocations from C1-C2 level to insert in your essay (phrases like “It is a contentious/controversial/disputable issue”, “This question bears tremendous importance”, “A sensible resolution of this problem/issue/task”, “To rise to a challenge”, “This is an incontrovertible proof” etc). Such expressions will fit almost any topic you might be given and be a good example of advanced language knowledge.

Also, do not forget to use “fillers” for textual cohesiveness to link sentences. You may refer to such cliches as “In addition,”, “Moreover,”, “On the one hand,”, “On the other hand,”, “Consequently,”, “As a result,”, “Therefore,”, “Despite”, “In spite of”, “Anyway,”, “To conclude”, “In conclusion,”, “To make a long story short,” etc.

Use strong verbs! (BUT! Use them in an appropriate context). For example, you may replace a verb “to start” with “to initiate, commence, launch, embark, trigger”; “to think” with “to reckon, suppose, consider, regard” and “to finish” with “to complete, terminate, accomplish, finalize”.

Avoid such simple words as “good, bad, some, say, really, as, a lot, sort of, just, like”. Come up with substitutions for them.

Revise verbs which are followed either by infinitive or gerund!

Recommended: 10 Simple Ways to Improve Your English

Watch the mistakes

Check all the unknown and “suspicious” words with the dictionary – in the essay, you should avoid using words, meanings of which you doubt. Read more English sources to get to know how words combine and act in the sentences.

Your essay must be clear, comprehensible and show your real skills in English writing. Pay attention to the grammar. Use online applications and grammar check services to proofread your writing and correct grammar and spelling mistakes. If you made a grammatical mistake, revise the rule and learn what you wrote wrong.

Get creative!

Read academic articles, thus, you will enrich your vocabulary. Also, you will get more facts and information about general subjects. This way you become more knowledgeable about things, new strategies of anything etc.

Read topic-related essays on the Internet, analyze them, make some corrections if necessary. Be critical. Do the same with your own essay. When you complete your writing, re-read it and find ways to improve it, correct spelling and syntactic mistakes.

Practice makes perfect! Improvisation is good, but it also might cost you pretty much if failed. Don't rely on your spontaneous thinking, practice writing essays on diverse topics at home. Try to connect your writing practice with some common topics such as governmental policies, environment protection, relationship, healthcare system, education, tourism, money, art, technology.

This way, you will come up with your personal point of view and ideas that you could use later at college. Also, since essay writing task is usually limited of time, having prepared ideas will allow you focus on writing itself rather than trying to cope writer's block at class.
