How to talk about books you have not read

Guest post by Justine Thomas (Share you tips with 40,000+ Malaysian students)

Stack of books

A cultural event, an environment of intellectuals, it comes to the book the content of which every respectable person has to superficially know at least. What to do if you are not familiar with this piece? How not to disgrace yourself and keep the conversation going with dignity? You’ll find out the answers in this article.

The cult of impeccable education

Library book rack

It is not necessary to open a book to express authoritative opinion about it, although experts may not like it.

Informal rule of intellectuals says: it is unacceptable to not read the book, but even more unacceptable, even indecent, to read "along the diagonal" or only superficially flip pages and admit it.

Thus for a teacher-humanist it is absolutely impossible to confess that he read Proust novel only in some places, but not from beginning to end. Yet the majority of people did so.

Sometimes non-reading can be useful. In addition, a conversation about the book you didn’t read can be extremely enthralling, even with a person who also did not read it.

Discussions about any book are a space for creativity

Coffee and book
We can get into a very awkward position when it comes to talking about unfamiliar books. However, forced conversations about the pieces whose content we do not know should not be taken as a burden, fear or remorse.

The virtual space of discussion about books is distinguished by high uncertainty that affects both participants, who cannot exactly say what they have read or not read, and a changing subject of the discussion itself.

The expressions about books are like interpretation in psychoanalysis: it entirely depends on the time that occurs, and it filled with meaning only during this period. In other words in a conversation about the book the book itself plays not as important role as direct moment of exchanging of ideas and experiences.

Using everything you know (name, text, an exact or invented quote), you can dive into the world of senses and virtual content lines, limitless space of creativity.

Some tips in case of a conversation about an unread book

Stressful lady reading book

1. Don’t be shy.

"In addition to money and intimate relationship, there are few areas of life, which is so hard to hear the truth about, as unread books."

It is always unclear which books your interlocutor has read. He may know the book not better than you do, therefore he feels just as insecure as you.

Silent sign in library

2. Convince other people in your own ideas.

It is easy to convince others of the correctness of your opinion because the book is not a frozen object. If you tie it with string and mark an ink line, this still won’t stop its movement.

No text has the only correct interpretation. In this case, the relevance of your thought depends on your oratorical abilities.

Newspaper and expresso coffee

3. Think up books.

Getting into a critical space, the book changes, turns on the relationship between the text and people. At any time you should be ready to formulate your views on this new moving object.

If your statement was rightly denied, there is nothing wrong to accept the fact that you made a mistake. Even the most serious book readers gradually forget the books they are familiar with.

Cool cat reading book

4. Talk about yourself

I don’t read books, which I have to review, because in this case I get under their influence.

Justine Thomas
So Oscar Wilde thought, claiming that normal reading duration is 10 minutes. If you read more, you risk forgetting that this is only an excuse for writing an autobiography.

The paradox of reading is that the way to you runs through the book. To pass it, do not linger.

Malaysia Universities QS World Rankings 2011 - 2015

The put the QS world university rankings of Malaysia top local public universities into perspective, we have compiled their rankings in the past five years. Based on this table, we conclude that the best university in Malaysia, University of Malaya (UM), has shown very little progress and is still far from the target of being the top 100. In 2011, former UM vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon set the target of UM achieving top 100 by 2015. He has since been fired and replaced by Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Amin Jalaludin in 2013. National University of Malaysia (UKM), which used to be the second best university in Malaysia for many years, has suffered a drastic drop in ranking this year.

Malaysia Universities QS World Rankings 2015/16

FMT reported:
The world ranking of Malaysia’s top three universities has continued to improve, with Universiti Malaya breaking the top 150, at 146th place, according to the QS World University Rankings 2015/2016 survey and report released today on www.topuniversities.com.

The country’s oldest university also received a full five rating under its QS Stars rating system.

The star rating system allows students to get a wider picture of an institution’s qualities, looking at everything from the employability of graduates, to sports facilities and community engagement.
The Star Online reported:
UM 146th in QS World University Rankings 2015/2016
QS Intelligence Unit head of research Ben Sowter said UM, which is ranked 146th, is still Malaysia’s number one.

The sharpest rise is seen in USM which is up 20 places to 289 compared to 309 in 2014 and Universiti Putra Malaysia which climbed up 45 places to 331 this year.
The Malay Mail Online added:
The global firm also said that the Malaysian universities excelled in two of the five faculty areas, with UM, USM and UTM ranked among the world’s Top 100 for Engineering and Technology while UM and USM sit among the Top 100 for Social Sciences & Management.

“The strengths of Malaysian institutions shine in the technical and social sciences while the performance in the world’s ranking has been mixed, with three universities rising mostly as a consequence of the methodological reform applied in this edition, three dropping, one new entry and one unchanged,” said QS head of research Ben Sowter.

How to Finish a School Group Project on Time?

How to finish a school group project on time?

Guest post by Alexandra Arnold (Share you education tips with 40,000+ Malaysian students)

In order to complete a group project fast, understand its requirements, divide the work, discuss problems, stay in touch and work together.

Group projects are a compulsory part of almost every academic course. Students are required to work on a single task together. It helps them in developing coordination, communication skills and being a good team player. However, group projects are beneficial for students, but due to the presence of individuals with different behavior, it sometimes becomes difficult for members to complete their project on time. Follow the guide below to know how to complete a group project fast:

How to Finish a School Group Project on Time?

Understand the requirements:

Every school project, be it a writing assignment or a presentation has some requirements that need to be followed while doing the project. Know what those requirements are and then do your project accordingly. For example, if your project is to write a historical essay, then you need to know what kind of historical topic you must choose. Whether it should be any historical event, place or thing, etc. What is the word count? What are the structural and format requirements that you need to follow in writing your paper? Etc. Understanding the requirements, not just makes the task easy for you, but also provides you ideas and guidelines for completing your task easily and fast as you get a clear idea about what you have to do and how.

Divide the work:

The best way to complete a group project fast is to divide the work equally to the group members by keeping in view their interest. It is very important to assign tasks according to one’s interest and abilities. Suppose if someone is good at calculations or has interest in it, then he or she can do it more easily and happily as compared to the one who doesn’t have any interest in it and doesn’t even know how to do it. So, if you are the group leader then divide the work and assign tasks to every member. First, ask them about what they are good at and what they want to do and then assign accordingly. In this way, you can complete your task in an effective manner and on time.

Discuss problems:

Discussion helps in finding out more ways to counter a problem and solve it easily. Stay in touch with all the group members and ask them to discuss their problems with one another. You can also take help from your advisor or course instructor in case if you find something really difficult and don’t know how to deal with it. Getting an instructor or advisor’s suggestions is considered beneficial for students as they are experienced and can give a more accurate solution for the problem.

Why it is necessary?

Finding out one’s learning style is necessary in this day and age. That is because if one is not aware of the learning style that is well suited for them, they can waste a lot of their time. And students know this better than anyone that time is a luxury that they don’t have much of. So if you want to find out your learning style, then just read on.

What remains in your memory?

The best way to do this is to try to remember the details of a meeting or other event that happened a little while ago. This will help you determine your learning style by using the information as to what do you remember the most. Is it something you saw? Is it something you heard? Or is it something you did?

Try each style

If the above method doesn’t work then you can still try each of the styles to find out which style works for you. But make sure the selected style should be match with your theme otherwise your overall project look will be awful. The thing to remember is that you give each style sufficient research and time before you move to the next. You have to learn all aspects about the selected style then implement.

Stick with it

Once you have found your learning style, you should stick with it if you want to complete your project quickly and efficiently. After selection of style you have to adopt it completely and learn about style from all available sources. A main issue faced by students that they do not stick with adopted style with confidence and west a lot time in rapidly switched styles. So make sure you have to stay on your decision confidently.

Get feedback:

Get feedback from group members from time to time regarding the completion of the project. Don’t leave things to the last minute. It is seen that in groups, there are students who don’t do their work on time and as a result lead the whole groups towards facing problem. If you have any such member in your group who is laid back and doesn’t complete work on time, then keep a constant contact with them and ask them to complete their task fast. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that our fast paced life leaves little time for anything else. We have a set routine which has to be followed and if we deviate from it, our whole world can come crashing down. This is doubly true for students who have no choice but to study all the time if they want to keep their grades up. While spending most of one’s time studying isn’t a bad thing, but spending all the time doing nothing else, is. But the high competition environment leaves students with no choice. All this can be changed to a great extent if one can find out one’s learning style.
