Malaysia Matriculation (Program Matrikulasi)

Widely accepted for entry into a bachelor’s degree course at public universities, the local matriculation program (program matrikulasi) started in 1972 1980s and has seen great changes ever since.

Run by local universities and only offered to Bumiputra students previously, it is now run by the Ministry of Education with 10% of places in the program offered to non-Bumiputra students.

Matriculation Colleges
The colleges which matriculation students are sent to include:
  • Kolej Matrikulasi Melaka
  • Kolej Matrikulasi Labuan

Intake
The program offers 2 intakes. The first intake which is a 1 year program, begins in April while the second intake which is a 2 year program, begins in May. Students are not given an option to choose the type of intake or where they want to study as these factors are determined by the matriculation department in the Ministry of Education.

Fee
RM255 for the registration. Tuition fees and accommodation are fully sponsored by the government. Matriculation students are also given an allowance for the entire duration of their studies.

Programme Offered (Source: Wikipedia)
Prior to 2006, only one-year programmes are being conducted. Since then, four different programmes are offered. They are One Year Programme (PST, short for Program Satu Tahun in Malay), Two Year Programme (PDT, short for Program Dua Tahun in Malay), Technical Programme and Accounting Programme. Mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry and informatics science subjects are conducted in English. Other compulsory subjects are English, Dynamics Skills (Kemahiran Dinamika), Islamic/Moral Study and Information Technology. Students are also required to take up a co-curricular activity of their choice (sports/games, societies/clubs or marching band) during the programme.

One Year Programme (PST)
PST is a one year, two-semester programme. Students from science, technical and accounting background can register for this programme. Particularly, for students from science background, there are three different modules to choose from. The subjects offered in the three modules are:
  • Module I: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
  • Module II: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science.
  • Module III: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science.
Two Year Programme (PDT)
PDT is a two-year, four-semester programme. Only students from science stream are involved in this programme. The same three modules from PST will be used, but students will be taught the same syllabus in a longer two-year time. This programme is meant to cater for students with lower academic achievement. This programme is only open for Bumiputera students.

Accounting Programme
This is a one-year, two-semester programme. The four subjects taught in the accounting module are Mathematics, Accounting, Business Study and Economy.

Technical Programme
First introduced in academic session 2009/2010, this one-year, four-semester programme is only available for students from technical secondary schools, or students from secondary schools with knowledge and background in engineering technology. Students registered for the technical modules will study four subjects - Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Physical Engineering and Engineering Study.

Assessment
Students are assessed constantly with a major exam at the end of each semester. Assignments and lab work are also taken into account in the final grade.

  1. matric is better than form 6..do you think so?
    can you give explanation?
its quite confusing for me to take form 6 or matric..

    ReplyDelete
  2. Depends how you think about matric and form 6...
Form 6 is definitely harder than matric but it gives you a strong base when you go for your degree.
As for matric,it's easy for you to get into top local uni but it gives you only a mere base and that means you need to struggle when you are in your degree.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous,
depends on whether you want to get into which university.
Form 6 provide strong foundation when you go into degree but matriculation only takes you a year.

    Anonymous,
yes,you can appeal if you didn't get matriculation and you will get into 2nd batch if you manage to appeal.

    Anonymous,
matriculation is apply during your form 5 around march. ask your counseling teacher for more information,s/he would be able to help you to apply.

    Anonymous,
the appeal form will release around may after the 1st batch enter the matriculation and you should know better that pharmacy really need to work with chemistry A LOT!! So you can't give up that subject no matter what.

    Anonymous,
medicine and bio-medicine are the same. you can work in the lab or be a doctor.

    Anonymous,
well,i think co-co is required but the main factor is your family income.

    kee swan,
nursing require science so if you get into the science stream, you could apply for nursing in the future. so not to worry about it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Elle,
I'm not sure about the allowance because it changes every year.
it's around RM250 per month if not mistaken.

    Aina Izzati,
Pre-U is just a term used for the course before you enter your degree level/university.Pre-medic normally consists of Biology,Chemistry and Math subjects combination and a lot of colleges offers pre-medic course so you no need to worry much about it.

    Anonymous Anonymous,
'Technical science' is basically a hand-ons course where you need to create/build something like electronics and engines.

    Anonymous Qad,
The subjects are mentioned above. Basically, you can't drop chemistry if you are entering science course.

    Anonymous Anonymous,
Maybe the amount of salary you entered when you apply doesn't mean the requirement of offers. Try to appeal for it.

    Anonymous Anonymous,
it is possible for you to get JPA scholarship if you got matriculation provided you are a very good and bright student.

    Blogger PG,
With matriks, you can enter local university easily with your 1st choice of course for your degree. So think twice whether you wan to accept it or not.

  35. Hmm. Hmm, think twice before you go there or think twice before you choose not to go there? Haha i know i'm confusing. But dentistry is a competitive course so I'm worrying. If 100% can get dentistry then sure I go because malaysia dentistry also not quite bad.

    ReplyDelete
  36. btw i think salary doesn't really add into the count because some of my friends who got through have quite adequate income.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i think that race do play a factor in getting into matrics. my friend said that they see according to your DAD's race. my dad's a chinese, which makes me a chinese and not a bumi, even though my mum's bidayuh.
as far as im concern 1 tahun matrikulasi is for those who obtained good results like maybe straight As. however for 2 tahun is for those who didnt obtain very good results.
i'm still confused though, the 'rayuan' results that they'll announce on 22nd may is for 2 tahun, is it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous,
You just need to fill in the appeal form on the matriculation website will do.

    Anonymous,
it's RM1000 per semester and matriculation only have 2 semesters.

    Anonymous,
10% of the places are given to Chinese so don't be sad if you cant enter matriculation. dot give up,you still can try to get scholarship after you finish your pre-u.Normally, matriculation is only 1 year. for those students who didn't score well in matriculation, they will need to retake another year. I'm not sure whether it works like this because I don't have any information about the 2 years. Sorry~

    Anonymous,
while waiting for your appeal results release, you will need to go for form 6 first.just incise you didn't manage to appeal.

    Anonymous,
I don't think it's like form 5. if you think like that, then how can you survive in you future 1st year degree?

    PG,
if you think you can score GPA 3.7 and above in matriculation, then choosing dentistry as your first choice wont be a problem to you.
What I meant by salary is the amount of the salary they entered during the application. they can type the amount which isn't real so that's why they can get it. One of the probabilities.

    Anonymous,
the rayuan normally is for the 1 tahun matriculation.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry..can anybodyhelp..if i get matrikulasi 2 tahun, i don't want can? i wan study form 6

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sori..i dont see any appeal form from the matriculation website? just clik rayuan and it said your rayuan was accept, rayuan anda diterima... enough already

  42. Hey, I got an offer for matriculation in Penang. Its kinda good-u get to enter public unis easily and you're on top of the list but note: ONLY public unis. Unlike STPM, we can venture overseas because it is recognized worldwide.

  43. I get enrolled into matric for science, but i hv a very silly question to ask: It says that i will violate the rules(perjanjian) if i fail to finish the programme. Then, i just wan to noe how much i must pay? And if i not go matric for registration, am i violate the rules? One more, is the perak and melaka matriculation better than negeri sembilan?

  49. Hi everyone I would like to know are there any local private Unis which recognise this pre-U (matriculation) in medicine ? If there are, can you please kindly inform me about the name of Unis? I appreciate your help very much, thanks =)

  50. is it really true that if u study matriks, u will surely get a place in Universiti, but if u are studying in form 6, your chances are very low? i've got matriks but i'm not thinking of goin, so any advise?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Here is my 2 cents worth of thought:
If u got offered matriks and ur not thinking of going, then why do you border to apply for it in the 1st place?? The ball is in your court. So think carefully on the path u want to take. Do u want to take the road least travelled which can make all the difference or do u prefer the well beaten track where everyone knows your name?. For one day down the road when u are old and gray and u reflect back on the long and winding road that u had travelled, u can say proudly that the decision u made then is what u had become today. No pain, no gain. U can live all your life and not really know who u really r until u can see yourself through the eyes of others! Good luck to whatever u decide on, may the force be with u always.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Are you nuts? Overdose? Out of spec? Need a shrink?
Either you accept the offer or you don't.
    Clear simple and straight forward.
There is no horse trading here.
If you don't want it, Gomen will be very happy to give your place to those who begged for it.
That is Gomen call, and not yours to make.
    Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 1. Once your name is in the Matriculation list, your name for the Form 6 list of students will be cancelled. To reject the offer for Matriculation, do not attend the registration. Instead, go and apply for Form 6.

    2. Girls are encouraged to wear baju kurung. But if you insist on wearing a skirt, the length must be until beneath your knees and it cannot be tight fitting.

    3. The allowance we get is RM 1250 per semester. According to some seniors, you will only get the allowance by the second month, which is June. This is because many students will leave Matriculation for some other course.

    4. By registering for Matriculation, it doesn't mean you won't get other offers, namely JPA. You may stop following the Matriculation Programme under 6 conditions(If I am not mistaken). One of which states that you are able to leave due to scholarship given by the government.

    5. By entering Matriculation, your future is set here in Malaysia. You will enter a University albeit local. You may not enter the University of your choice but this is all up to the student. Score 4 pointer and who would refuse you?

    6. According to a statistic that I read, only a meagre of 10% STPM students enter the local University. I don't know the extend of the truth so take it with only a pick of salt.

    7. Studying far away from your home will happen sooner or later. I suggest we all buckle up and move forward. Besides, it is only a year programme. Your job now is to study and work hard in life. This obstacle of being away from home will happen. It is ineveitable.

    Good luck guys!

so...please dont judge anymore about pdt and pst. pdtrian are well enough to live than pst... see it to believe it.

the between 1 year and 2nd year is study in:
1 year-you must be struggle because the PMP going to fast..you are lucky if get
teacher who want to repeating the topic we are learning..but the chance so LOW!
2 year-the learning prosess is exactly same with the 1 year but they have more time for study..more relax i think...

Did u mean south australia matriculation(sam) n local matriculation? Yeap, local matriculation is under the higher ministry of education, basically u wil b enter local uni onli after 1 year course. In contrast, the South Australian Matriculation program (S•A•M) is an internationally recognised one year pre-university matriculation program.SAM is for overseas study onli.

I feel that everyone should know private uni doesn't mean it's gonna make a deep hole in your pocket. Many Private uni have special offer for bumiputras.(like 40% study grant etc etc) So i suggest opt for Private Uni if your results in matrix not so good like me..:(

you can still continue the course u like and not take diploma!! and can get MARA! or other scholarships~ ^^but just make sure u get 2.00 above at least !

  87. Of matrix and JPA scholarship, if ones get matrix, then no JPA scholarship for him/her and vice versa. Is this true anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I just finished my matriculation programme in kedah matriculation college. It's not true that if one is not elligible to obtain a jpa scholarship after being offered a place in matrix. I've got friends who were offered jpa scholarships and places in matrix, so don't worry. Last year, the jpa scholars were notified before going to their respective matriculation colleges. But, some came and studied for awhile, and went away soon when they finally got the jpa scholarship after appealing. So, no worries! -smile-

    1. That's the minimum requirement. There are a lot (I mean A LOT) candidates with results much better than the minimum requirement who are not offered a place due to limited places.
